Personal Finance Workshop

From November 5th to November 8th, Robyn and her daughter Araceli visited Luz de Vida with Gordon Tanner. Gordon shared his vast knowledge of Personal Finance with the youth by conducting a Personal Finance Workshop.

At the end of our Personal Finance workshop we proposed a Savings Challenge to our youth. Each week they will have the opportunity to give money they save to the director who will put it in an envelope. At the end of six months the person who has saved the most will receive a prize!

Join us in Peru – Winter Peru Crew 2015

Have you been wanting to join a Peru Crew, but your summers are too busy? Would you like to join other adults and families for a life-changing experience? Escape the cold weather and head down to Peru with us! We are leading our first Winter Peru Crew 2014 February 14th – 21st, 2015. The team is open to 14 people and will be based on a first come, first serve basis. This team is an intergenerational team of adults, families and youth. Winter Peru Crew 2015 will participate in the projects of Corazon de Esperanza by leading and coordinating activities for the youth transitional home, youth bible study, children’s outreach and women’s ministry. The team will also participate and lead community projects with local partners – including local orphanages and churches. Hands on work projects are also a part of the week’s activities.

Summer Teams Inspire

Christ Community Church of Taunton, Massachusetts was the last group this summer to serve with the ministries of Corazon de Esperanza.  They worked so hard and had an amazing week! The team completed a variety of work projects at the Luz de Vida transitional home.  They also invited the youth to a course for three mornings that focused on learning Bible study methods. Regional Training for Local Orphanages

Earlier this month, one of our board members, Heather Giezendanner, had the opportunity to present a 2-day training for about 50 staff members from various orphanages in the region, including directors, social workers, psychologists, and live-in educators. Liz Bernuy, the director of the transitional home, coordinated the training, which was attended by 98% of orphanages in the region. The training focused on the impact of childhood trauma on adolescents, as well as tools and techniques to help adolescents successfully transition out of orphanages.  Various directors from the local and national authorities attended portions of the training, including some of the directors from Peru’s national social service agency and the regional director.  The local government paid for all of the supplies, materials and refreshments, in order to allow everyone the opportunity to attend.

The training was an incredible opportunity to gain awareness for the Luz de Vida transitional home at both a regional and national level.  Since Luz de Vida is the only transitional home in northern Peru for youth transitioning out of orphanages, many of the orphanage staff and local authorities have not yet fully understood how to explain the concept of a transitional home to those living at their facilities.  It became clear throughout the training that there is a great need for the transitional home and supportive services for youth aging out of orphanages.  It will be exciting to see how the connections made at the training allow for more youth to receive the help and support that they need.

Northern Peru’s only youth transitional home celebrates 3 years of providing hope to young people throughout Trujillo. Changes

The past few months we have focused on the development of our youth transitional home program, including training our staff more effectively, creating job descriptions and a work manual, as well as restructuring our home. It’s been incredible to have people in our ministry who have so many skills and the ability to work together to bring some positive changes! We have also redefined the previous role of ‘Madre Tutora’ to more of a Life Coach for the girls, or Entrenadora. We are pleased to introduce Gasdahly who has taken the role of Entrenadora for Luz de Vida. She has dedicated the next few months to working with our girls daily. After her training period, we pray that she will continue to serve on our team! Please pray for wisdom and strength as she pours herself into the girls who live in our home.
