Patricia – the gift of education

Patricia is 22 years old, works full time to support her parents and younger brother, and has never finished high school.  Her parents are uneducated and their economic situation is dire.  Patricia has been working since a young age to help her family pay for basic necessities like soap, toothpaste, shampoo and detergent to wash their clothes.  A few years ago, she quit high school so that she could work.  She found a job as a maid for another family, where she worked 12 hour days, 6 days a week and received only $90 per month, which did not cover her basic necessities.  This schedule and rigor made it impossible for her to study and finish her education.  Like many youths we work with, Patricia struggled with the desire to better her future with education and the reality of needing to provide for her family.

Recently we have been working with the Ministerio de Trabajo y Promoción de Empleo (Department of Labor) in Trujillo to find resources to ensure Patricia’s right to receive a fair wage for her work.  They have helped her find a new job selling cell phones in a market, where she works less hours and still earns $85 per month.  She now has time to study!   Corazón de Esperanza, through the Hogar Luz de Vida project, has now provided a full scholarship for Patricia to finish her high school at InterAmericano school.  She studies Thursdays and Saturdays from 3pm – 6:30pm and will be able to complete her 4th and 5th year of high school.  Patricia will be the first in her family to graduate from high school.  After she receives her diploma, she would like to study administration in an institute that offers a 3 year degree.  We hope to have scholarships for Patricia to help support her dream.  The gift of education is changing Patricia’s life and providing her hope for a better future.
