A few of our teens in Peru were able to experience this for the first time this past Saturday when they joined together for worship and fellowship. Director sits on Regional Board
Liz Bernuy, the director of our new project and youth transitional home, Hogar Luz de Vida, was asked to sit on the Board of Directors for La RED Cenares, an organization that unites and speaks as the voice for all orphanages throughout the Libertad Region of Perú. La RED Cenares works with 14 residential orphanages and homes, which our project, Hogar Luz de Vida, is a member. Their goal is to help support centers that work with abandoned and at-risk children and are working towards spreading out to all regions of Perú. Update on María’s Surgery
With many thanks to generous donors, María was able to have the surgery on the small cyst on her eyelid yesterday at the Clinica Caceda. Due to her poor living conditions, María will be staying with our director, Liz Bernuy, and her family for a few days while she recovers. Liz will need to clean the eyelid and put new bandages on four times a day and also give María the proper dosage of antibiotics and medication. Yesterday was not only about María’s surgery, it was also the celebration of her 16th birthday! Liz, her husband, Obal, and their son Mateo celebrated with María by baking a chocolate cake. Surgery for María
María has been attending our Saturday discipleship classes that are currently held in Liz’ home. María, the 4th of 8 siblings, spent several years in an orphanage in Trujillo with her younger brother while her step-father served a prison sentence. She was one of the few who have been reunited with her biological family, although the financial situation is daunting, as both her mother and step-father are field workers. Continuing the education she had at the orphanage has been a challenge – financially and due to the lack of support. She is struggling to succeed in school and is lacking many of the needed supplies. She is preserving with the hopes to graduate and go to the university to study accounting. Each Saturday morning she meets with our other teens to pray, grow in her faith and also receive support for her studies.
A few months ago, María came to the class with a small cyst on her eyelid. After several weeks, her eye became worse and she didn’t have the means to go to the doctor. María, who is usually outgoing, became introverted and insecure and even missed several weeks of the discipleship class. Our ministry paid for a doctor’s visit and the topical medication she needed. However, dud to several months without treatment, the cyst on her eye did not respond to the treatment and became infected. Our staff took María to visit an eye-doctor again and they decided she would need surgery immediately. If you have both of these, then you are all set. Last night I spoke with our Peru director, Liz, about the seemingly never-ending search for a building to house the special teens we are working with. We have been searching for almost three months and have been close to making a deal on two different occasions. In both cases, the owners changed their minds about the sale and wanted to keep the properties within their family. Needless to say, this has been disheartening for us. We are anxious to have a building and provide a home for those teens who are being turned out on the streets after years spent in orphanages… teens who have not been prepared for life outside of institutional living.
As we talked last night, we both had an understanding that God has been moving this ministry forward and providing for us each and every step of the way. We also realized the need to continue to dedicate ourselves to prayer for guidance and wisdom. Our wants, desires and hopes for this ministry are under the submission of God’s plan and purpose. As a result, today our Peru team is meeting together to pray and fast for the perfect building. Many of us, in the states, are taking time to fast and pray as well. Will you join us?

The Peru team will end their time of prayer by visiting two buildings and two more pieces of property where we could possibly build. Maybe today is the day we find a building or maybe we will have to continue the search. Either way, we are open to what God has in store.
